Instead, more than 95% of the statistical support went to a model of random, undirected change for the growth of the braincase in the line leading to modern humans. The same was true for the Neanderthal line and for facial changes in both lineages. These findings suggest that the changes in brain and facial features were not driven by consistent selective pressures but rather by chance and the removal of constraints.

The Role of Constraints and Cultural Habits

A large brain and a heavy, muscular face are energetically costly. For most of human evolution, these costs may have limited the size and shape of these features. However, cultural habits, such as butchering animals, processing food, and cooking, increased the energy available from each meal, reducing the demands on chewing muscles and jaws. This easing of constraints allowed for greater variation in brain and facial features, with changes accumulating over time without a consistent selective advantage.

Implications and Future Research

This study shifts the focus from hunting for advantages in each increment of brain growth to understanding when and why the old constraints were lifted. The researchers suggest that these moments of release could be seen as the real turning points in human evolution. This new perspective challenges the idea that the traits we associate with intelligence are solely the result of selective forces, suggesting that chance and cultural innovations played equally important roles.

As Hubbe and Harvati conclude, this study opens up new avenues of research, inviting scientists to explore the cultural and environmental factors that influenced human evolution and to reconsider the traditional narrative of a steady climb towards intelligence.
