Thunder Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Sidelined Until After All-Star Break
The Oklahoma City Thunder's star player, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, will be out of action until after the All-Star break due to an abdominal strain sustained during Tuesday's game. This injury will keep the reigning MVP on the sidelines for at least five games, starting with Wednesday night's loss to the San Antonio Spurs. Gilgeous-Alexander's absence will also mean he won't be able to participate in the new three-team All-Star Game format, with Commissioner Adam Silver selecting his replacement for the World team.
The Thunder announced that Gilgeous-Alexander will be re-evaluated after the All-Star break, with their first game post-break set for February 20th against the Brooklyn Nets. This is a significant setback for the defending NBA champions, who boast a league-best 40-12 record. Gilgeous-Alexander is the league's second-highest scorer with 31.8 points per game and is having an exceptional all-around season. He leads the league in field-goal percentage at 55.4% (14th) and in assists with 6.4 per game (15th).
Thunder coach Mark Daigneault acknowledged the impact of Gilgeous-Alexander's absence, stating, 'He's a high-usage, high-impact player for us. We'll have to step up collectively as a group, which is what we do when he's on the bench.'
Gilgeous-Alexander's injury follows a string of health issues for the Thunder. In the win over the Orlando Magic, Oklahoma City was already without Jalen Williams (hamstring injury) and Ajay Mitchell (abdominal strain), both of whom missed their respective eighth and sixth games. The Thunder also had a busy Wednesday, acquiring guard Jared McCain from the Philadelphia 76ers and trading away reserve forward Ousmane Dieng to the Charlotte Hornets.
Despite the challenges, Daigneault remains optimistic, noting that the team has a history of making the most of such situations. With Gilgeous-Alexander out, the remaining players will have increased opportunities, and the team will look to build on their recent success.
