UConn Icon Shares Insight with Azzi Fudd, Sarah Strong, and Others About the WNBA Challenge Ahead
Transitioning from college basketball to the professional arena is no small feat, and many players encounter challenges along the way. The WNBA adds another layer of difficulty with its limited roster size of just 12 players, which often leaves aspiring athletes to either accept training camp contracts or wait for chances to step in as hardship replacements. As talented players like Sarah Strong and Azzi Fudd prepare to take this leap in the coming years, a notable UConn alum has important advice regarding what awaits them.

Kia Nurse, a two-time national champion during her time at UConn and currently a free agent after her stint with the Chicago Sky, has some valuable insights for the next wave of UConn graduates about their futures in the WNBA.
Nurse expressed, "In a league where maintaining a spot is extremely challenging and opportunities are scarce, we consistently see Connecticut players entering the league and enjoying lengthy careers. Some will emerge as franchise cornerstones, while others, like myself, may find roles as glue players or supportive contributors. This speaks volumes about the coaching staff at UConn, particularly Coach Auriemma and his team, for effectively preparing us for the professional realm." These thoughts were shared in her recent appearance on the Hoops 360 podcast.
She went on to elaborate, "Many coaches from around the league have remarked that when they recruit a player from Connecticut, they already have confidence in what they’re getting. They know the quality of coaching these players have received, as well as the discipline and intelligence they bring into the league. This builds excitement among teams to pursue these athletes because of the proven track record of UConn alumni."
UConn has a history of producing top-tier talent, ranging from legends like Maya Moore and Diana Taurasi to contemporary stars such as Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier. This pipeline of elite players shows no signs of slowing down, especially with Paige Bueckers recently earning the title of Rookie of the Year, while her backcourt partner, Azzi Fudd, is tipped to follow in her footsteps as a potential future ROY.
Looking ahead, in just two years, we could welcome another standout player, Sarah Strong, into the league. Her exceptional skills position her to potentially rank among the greatest players the league has ever seen—a claim we don’t make lightly. Currently, Strong boasts impressive averages of 19.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 4.5 assists per game, making her a strong contender for the National Player of the Year award.
The dynamic partnership of Sarah Strong and Azzi Fudd has captivated the nation. Together, they are averaging a staggering 36.5 points per game this season, effectively filling the scoring gap left by Paige Bueckers, who was a central figure in last year's offense. Their performance against formidable opponents only enhances their reputation; in five matchups versus teams currently ranked in the top 15, they combined for an average of 47.8 points per game. Their outstanding outing against Tennessee showcased their talent, as it marked the second time this season they scored over 50 points collectively, the first instance being against Iowa.
There’s little doubt that once these two athletes make their transition into the professional league, they will create a significant impact. Could Sarah Strong even challenge Candace Parker’s historic achievement as the only rookie to win the MVP award? Only time will tell. But for now, the focus remains on their ongoing success on the court.
What’s Next for Sarah Strong and Her Teammates?
UConn's recent victory over Tennessee, with a score of 96–66, not only extended their winning streak to an impressive 39 games but also highlighted their 18th consecutive win by 25 points or more—an accomplishment unmatched by any Division I team in the last quarter-century. With a current record of 23–0 overall and 12–0 in the Big East, the Huskies are once again on the path toward an undefeated season.
While history offers both caution and hope for UConn, it’s worth noting that their last unbeaten streak ended in a heartbreaking Final Four loss to Notre Dame. Conversely, they have also clinched six national titles without a single loss, suggesting this current team has the potential to achieve similar glory.
Upcoming matchups against DePaul, Butler, and Creighton appear favorable, with each game looking winnable for Sarah Strong and her teammates.
This season is poised to be Azzi Fudd’s last at UConn, as she is widely projected to be a top-three draft pick. Meanwhile, Sarah Strong is expected to remain with the Huskies for two more seasons before making her own move to the professional ranks. This situation sets the stage for what is likely the final chapter for the Fudd-Strong duo, and both are eager to finish their journey by adding another championship to UConn's storied legacy.
